We have a photo of a toilet in Paris where the ring/seat rotated in a circle but the ring was oval (had to be there). It was the hit on a two bottle of wine night. "Toilets of the World" Book idea? Or -- "Potty Humor"?
oh wow! i read somewhere that Japanese people get really embarrassed by the actual sound of using the bathroom, so those buttons are to help cover it up. But you're right, they almost make it scarier! haha, bring on the peeing stage fright!
Those bidet seats are the best! I still can't, for the life of me, figure out why they haven't caught on more in the US. I don't know about you, but I like a clean shiny hiney.

I work at a high school in Japan where the other female faculty (and students) continue to continuously flush the toilet (since we don't have these electronic babies installed), despite the fact that we've been issued a warning from the water company that we have been using way too much water.

I had one of these in my apartment when I lived in China. The best part was the heated seat in winter. I had to cook in my winter coat and scarf but my bum was always toasty warm!

Those types of toilets are awesome. In the Bandai factory in Shizuoka, the male restroom has colorful toilets with bright colors like some of their Gundam models. There's even caution sign on the door to them! Such a shame the ladie's restroom isn't the same. Some other toilets have had different flushing sounds as well if I do remember. I think the ones at the Tokyo Youth Hostel I stayed at had a more musical sounding one.
Other "cover-ups" I remember from my brief stays in Japan almost twenty years ago: Free pasties to wear under your bathing suit in the swimming pool and not-so-free caps for your hair, 24-hour deodorant for cats and dogs, disposable underwear soaked in perfume, and mangas (to me they were mostly cover-ups for hideous porn).
Back then, I felt like Alice in Wonderland, but in hindsight I thoroughly enjoyed Japan.
The toilets in Japan always confused me. I remember one time I in a bathroom in the subway and thought I was flushing one, but instead what appeared to be the "flush me button" was the emergency alarm. About 10 people ran in ready to help only to find a shocked and embarrassed American trying to flush the toilet. They weren't happy. Believe me when I say that was one time when I was happy I didn't understand Japanese.

Heated seat is great in winter and washing bum and the bidet are actually very good to clean yourself. You just gotta be careful not to play with them when you are not sitting, ha!
Ha Ha we lived in Okinawa and now Iwakuni... when my five year old was potty training we thought it would be funny to hit the spray button and have the water splash her in the butt. Anyways.... three years later and she still opts for the button less squatty potty. ;)
Have fun in Japan we love it so much we are hoping to be here for 6 more years!!!
I read somewhere that the Japanese are embarrassed by their peeing sounds, so that's supposed to muffle the sound. But yeah, fire breathing dragon sound, kinda scary. :)

My niece lives in Japan, she told me about those and said the sound effects were there to "mask" the noises that you may make yourself - LOL !!

The noise is hilarious. Maybe it's for people who hate making noises in public restrooms when taking a crap? (Who doesn't?)
