Winter is coming!

It may be freezing outside but there's a million reasons to love winter: hot chocolate, pretty christmas lights, excuses to get lots of warm hugs...

My favorite thing is that I get to wear fun colorful tights!

So let's play a game, what's your favorite thing about winter?
I'm going to send a little present in the mail to whoever has the loveliest answer. I will pick someone on Wednesday so make sure to put your email or a link to your blog in the comments so I can contact you!

These are a few of my favorite things:

Chai tea and gingerbread and candles.

The smell of cold air.

Grey skies and yellow leaves (we don't get snow here).

Walks in the park without hayfever. Early sunsets and starry nights.

My huge black velvet coat. Scarves. Black gloves with the fingertips missing. Cozy pullovers.

Daring to wear short skirts because I can put tights underneath.

Hmmm... it's tough to choose just one thing...

Growing up, it was definitely snow days spent sledding outside and having girls vs. boys snowball fights.

Now, I live in SC, and snow is usually not a part of the winter (plus people might get upset if I pelt them with snowballs). So, it would have to be throwing sparkly holiday parties and hosting board game bonanzas when it's too cold to go outside. :)

I love your colorful photos! They're so playful and fun!

I don't care for cold weather, so when it arrives, I find joy in having an excuse to stay in my PJs longer, cover up with throws, make lots of hot tea and cocoa, and watch movies with my kids. :)

twinkle lights!!!!!!!

It may sound like a simple thing but I live in Alaska and we do not get a lot of light in the winter. Everyone puts up twinkle lights. It is one of the things I look forward to when winter comes. Brings a smile to my cold face. =]

My cat Paris gets extra cuddly in winter when it's cold. He jumps up on my bed and nudges his head against mine and meows asking me to lift the blanket. When I do he crawls under and snuggles up next to me and we keep each other warm. He makes me giggle when he tries to find his way out - he's just a lump tunneling under the blanket!

May favorite thing about winter is that I can pull out my sweaters. I live in Florida so the only time I can wear them is when it is winter. I also love knowing that my family up north is getting good use of the scarves, hats and stuff I knit for them.

The way the snow lights up as I drive through it, turns my imagination back to Star Trek and I feel like speeding through space and time.

Of course there are also the romantic qualities of the season, but I love watching little kids try to walk around in their giant snow boots. It's gotta be the cutest thing.

Have you ever been out really really late after a storm? The snow is pristine and sparkly...the world is quiet, freshly blanketed in beautiful white. There is something so achingly beautiful about those moments. I've only had a few, but i love them all the same.

I love winter because:
1) its cold outside, so its a good excuse to snuggle up with my boyfriend to stay warm
2) christmas happens during winter and i love spending the holidays with my mom's siblings/families
3) the flavoured hot chocolate/beverages are now available at coffee shops
4) i get to sport my pashminas and not feel silly because i'm sweating for fashion
5) of SNOW; need I say more?

Ooooh, winter. Well, I catch the CityCat (a type of ferry) to work, so I love tootling along the Brisbane River on winter mornings with my travel mug of hot tea and a snuggly scarf. It feels more like an adventure when you travel anywhere by boat in winter! (Plus, I like to make cups of tea or coffee for the friendly ferry staff in takeaway cups, every now and again to surprise them!

Winter?

Walking down a near empty street in a jacket I picked randomly from my hall closet (likely belonging to my mom or dad at one point) and getting snowflakes in my eyes.

snowmen.

the music (oh yes, the music!)

the overall feeling of good cheer in the air.

(but mostly the handmade cookies made by my mom.)

my very favourite thing about winter is our annual summer fun party. it can only happen in the dead of winter, when it's -25 degrees Celsius (I live in Canada!).

the word is spread, the temperature is cranked, and everyone arrives with summery potluck items. sangria, margaritas, tacos, and bean salads! and we all wear shorts and tshirts and sometimes bikinis, and we sweat like crazy because the house is full of friends and the thermostat reads 30 degrees above inside, and we play songs that remind of us of summer, and sing together and play board games. it's our little oasis in the winter, when the snow is four feet deep and isn't going anywhere for at least a couple of months.

and the best thing is that it doesn't cost near as much as a trip to Mexico would cost, and all of our friends can come. the party starts at 2pm and lasts well into the night, so literally a hundred people might pop through the house at some point.

The hilarious and yummy color peoples noses turn! The huge grey sky that inspires me to write. Houses completely covered with decorations and lights so they look like gingerbread houses. Not caring that you can't get the car out of the driveway and just bundling up and delivering goodies by foot. My kitty coming inside and snuggling up with me! The smell of Starbucks at The Gateway. The stronger inclination to tell someone you love them. :) Your blog inspires me more than you can know, Katie. Happy holidays!!

I love winter because the landscape is covered in a bright clean layer of snow, covering the dried brown grass and dressing the trees with soft white lace. Animals hole up and hibernate and the bugs are gone for the season, so the nights are quiet and still.

Unknown said...

My favorite parts of winter are naturally rosy cheeks and pushing your hair away from your face with mittened hands, which does not work but it warms your face up, so you keep doing it.

I love winter for rare and beautiful snow days off from work! I live in the South, so it rarely snows, but we occasionally get iced in.

So, I wake up to a warm, toasty house, make a cup of tea and meditate on the chilly outside. Then I do something creative to pass the day and it's peaceful and lovely and me-time and it's great. Truly.

I love winter, but being from Arizona it doesn't always feel like the holidays. I especially love the season because I can drive up north to my favorite mountain town, drink hot chocolate, and enjoy the calm, quiet snow for a few hours. :)

The warm hearts despite the coldness outside.

All the holiday lights that fill up the streets (it kinda makes you feel like you're in a movie!)

Decorating the christmas tree with my mom (I never got to do this when I was younger because we both lived in separate countries. But now that I'm older and living in the US, it's definitely something I always look forward to come winter time :D)

Feasting with family and friends!

Oh! And those comfy holiday edition Cosby sweaters :D

I love Winter because I get to spend it at Central Park. I love that I can go sledding there with my baby cousin. I love the whole "Winter Wonderland" feel in New York City. I love walking through the city at night, especially when snow is falling and stopping by Serendipity3 and thinking maybe I'll meet someone just like in the movie Serendipity! I love the Christmas carols in just about every place you walk into. Gives me a reason to take off my earphones. I love decorating the Christmas tree with my dad. I love that everyone's a bit friendlier. I love looking out my window in the morning. It's everything about it. The way it makes you tingly inside knowing it's the most joyous season, the warmth in your body when sipping on hot chocolate, the rain boots from the melting snow, and so much more.

I actually want a Winter wedding. :)

I love the silent glitter of winter. Snow muffles every sound, and as such, life seems so much more peaceful, with only Christmas lights and bright white snow to guide our feet and our thoughts. As the color disappears from trees and lawns, I break out my colorful tights, coats, and accessories. Just as soon as there is no life-giving color left in the world, I resurrect my many GREEN coats to spruce up even the dreariest winter day.

I love winter because I get to go home to Puerto Rico for the holidays. And this time of year in PR is lovely! Everyone is so happy and all the palm trees have christmas lights on them. and people do actually still go caroling. or at least the PR version of it. And sometimes - if I'm really lucky - it will snow here in NY days before I go home. So i get to have a white and a sandy holiday season!

I love to see people's faces when they open gifts (for Christmas, 'cuz that's what I celebrate, but this would apply to any other winter holiday), especially my mom. She works/has worked so hard for me, I'm always happy to give her something back. :-)

I love winter because its a time for us arizona people to pretend that it is actually cold. Going outside you see the people who have grown up here, they wear big boots and heavy jacket because they think its cold, even though its sixty degrees, then you see the people who are from out of town and are wearing flip flops and a t-shirt ,it might as well be summer to them because where they come from its negative 30 degrees. plus everyone has there christmas lights wrapped around their cactus ,creating a warm, happy feeling inside.

The best thing I love about winter is the snow, the snow when it is still and quiet and it feels like you are in a snow globe. The snowflakes lightly falling down and melting as soon as they hit your skin. It makes you appreciate the little things and be really thankful for everything and everyone you have in your life.

I will have to say watching The Nutcracker ballet every year with my mom since I was very young. We both get dressed up, put on pearls, and go and watch sugar plum fairies and snowflakes float around the stage to music that makes me nostalgic. Afterward we go home to my family's house, eat homemade cookies, drink fresh coffee, and chat. It's so representative of peace after an exhausting fall semester, and it's my favorite tradition!

My favorite thing about winter revolves solely around Christmas. Christmas spirit is in the air. It's the season of giving.

It's that time of the year, that even though we are in a recession, it is the last thing on our minds. It's that time of year where we can't help but smile because we know tomorrow a pine tree will be bought, and lights will be put up. It's that time of year in which you get to wake up to a wrapped package under the tree, or a piece of candy in your stocking. It's that time of year, that even if you can't afford a gift... a walk through the neighborhood is more than enough thanks to all the Christmas lights.

It's that time of year where children bring out their sharpest red crayons to write Santa about what a good kid they've been. It's that time of year where cookies and milk are left on the kitchen counter (even though it's the parents who take advantage) (: . It's that time of year that let's you believe that miracles CAN happen.

THATS my favorite part of winter.

My favorite thing about winter is going for a walk with my mom on the first night of a snow storm. The sky is always lite up because of the way the moon reflects on the snow. And everything is so quiet and peaceful. No one has touched the fresh snow, and so it feels like you're walking in a dream. And it's such a sweet time to just talk and walk with my mom!

I love winter because I go to boarding school and it is wonderful to see all the beautiful kids around me come together to create a family away from home while the holidays approach. All of us are so far away from our homes and families, but we work hard to keep up the holiday spirit with things like Secret Santa games in the dorm, a capella groups traveling around campus singing carols, hot chocolate in every classroom, and spontaneous snowball fights on the lawn. I love that people can come together so strongly over a thing like Christmas or the holidays in general, even when they're dealing with homesickness and would much rather be snuggled up with their families instead of studying and working in old dorm rooms. The spirit of the holidays never fails to amaze me.

My favourite thing about winter is going for a walk in the nighttime, when the moon is out and its snowing and the snowflakes are pretty and orange in the streetlights. I really love how silent it gets- a whole other level of silent than anywhere else! Everything is so muffled, and if you laugh or sneeze or try to talk to someone it gets swallowed up by the falling snow. I live in the Canadian prairies, and the winters here get bitterly, bitterly cold and it's important to bundle up a lot, which is part of the lovely quality of taking a walk in the winter snow at night, with mittens too thick to properly brush the snow out of your eyebrows and your very footsteps disappearing into the fresh snow.

I love winter because you can come from the outside, completly frozen and cold, but in your house everything is warm and cozy. You grab a blanket and wrap it around you, you put your feet on the heating and with a hot chocolate you watch the snow or rain falling from the grey sky and your happy to be inside again. And this feeling almost every day again.

I love the winter in Arizona. We get just the right amount of cold without the snow. One of my favorite things about this time of year is when they put tons of Christmas lights, and nativity scenes on at the Mormon temple in Mesa. They have chiors from all over the valley come and sing, orchestras, perform, and many people of all backgrounds, religions, and cultures come to rejoice in the Savior's birth. It is amazing to me and I love it every year, it never gets old.

That's a good question, I wonder if the answer would be different for people from other countries, I'm not american, not even english so sorry for the way I write.
I love winter because of that first morning, when my mom says "It snowed" and I run to the window with a big smile, I love it because you can do some sled or just sitting in the snow, watching the sky or the landscapes, when it's not so late but you can see all the lights in the city. The biggest christmas market of the country takes place in my city, so I love eating a Nutella waffle while visiting it with my friends, with all this happy people around. I love drinking a hot chocolate when it's really cold, and giving my christmas presents to the people I love. I also love it because for the second year one of my friends who lives far away is coming, and every cold day is like if she was closer. Snow, hot chocolate and awesome friends, that's really all I need

winterrrrr! i love it because suddenly war is peaceful and the world is peaceful. everyone smiles. i'd hate to think that someone out there could be spending christmas alone :o( and theres always the girly things... not having to shave your legs as regularly because no one in their right mind will go outside with bare legs anyway :o) not having to use powder on my face because it goes naturally clearer and paler, with pink cheeks and frozen ears. getting to wear boots that have a fluffy inside - feeling like your walking on the clouds rather than on the chewing-gum-littered ground. getting to have a thick thick duvet on my bed! and being able to cuddle a hot water-bottle without being sick :o) staying inside and FINALLY getting things organized... for the first time this year ;o) i love buying a christmas tree and realising its either to big to fit through my front door, or too small and stout with less branches than it seemed to have in the shop!
has anyone invented door-handle warmers yet? my door handles are colder than me! ;o)

luuuuurve your post, as always :o)

My most favorite thing about winter is the moment when a snowflake falls on your windshield and you are able for just a split second to see the beauty of the flake. You can only see the shape, personality and sparkle for a brief moment, but that moment is magical. After that moment is over it's personality is either melted away or jumbled in with the rest of the snow and you'll never see it again.

though i agree with all the other posts about loving snow, dressing warm, eggnog, christmas lights, warm hugs, etc.. the thing i think i absolutely love the most is that it's the time when everyone comes together for something great. No matter where you are or who you are, there are always people trying to help others in the winter time. Whether it's with food, old coats and boots, or just going around caroling to cheer up someone's day. Even just that everyone blogs and writes about it. There are so many beautiful things in the winter that bring us all together to make everyone feel loved, and show us that we're really not all that different from each other as we thought. We all have trials, but we can come together to help each other. This makes winter such a magical time for us all, and i'm so grateful to that.
